Ottawa Loan FAQ

Fifteen answers for Ottawa borrowers, grouped by cost, applying, credit and repaying, each with a link to the page that goes further. A payday loan of $100 to $1500 costs $14 per $100 and comes due in one debit on your next pay date; an installment loan of $500 to $10000 runs 18% to 35% APR over 3 to 60 months.

Cost and Ontario rules

What does a payday loan cost in Ottawa?

$14 for every $100 borrowed, as one flat fee under federal regulation and Ontario law. A $300 loan costs $42 and repays $342 on your next pay date; $500 costs $70 and repays $570. The payday loans Ottawa page works through every amount up to $1500.

Why was I offered less than $1500?

Because an Ontario lender may lend at most 50% of your net pay for the pay period, so the ceiling is set by your deposit rather than by the $1500 cap. A net pay of $2200 every second Wednesday allows up to $1100, and most first loans land between $100 and $500. The how it works page shows where that check happens in the offer.

How long do I have to cancel?

Two business days from the day you sign, at no cost, under the Payday Loans Act, 2008. You give written notice and return the money, and the lender cannot charge a fee or keep any of the cost. The e-transfer loans Ottawa page shows how the window runs when the money lands on a Friday evening.

What is the extended payment plan and when does it apply?

It is a plan the lender must offer when you take a third payday loan within 63 days, spreading repayment over several pay periods at no extra cost. Three loans in nine weeks means the loan is no longer covering a one time gap. The installment loans Ottawa page is the better fit if that is where you are.

What does an installment loan cost?

Between 18% and 35% APR, set by your credit file, your income and your time in the job, never above the 35% federal criminal rate. At 29% APR, $3000 over 24 months is about $166 a month and roughly $990 in interest. The installment loans Ottawa page has the payment tables.

Applying and funding

How do I apply from Ottawa?

Online, in about five minutes: a short form, a read-only bank connection so the lender can see your pay deposits, and an e-signed agreement that shows the cost in dollars and the repayment date. You must be 18, with employment income landing in a Canadian chequing account. The how it works page lists what to have ready.

Can I apply from an O-Train platform or on the bus?

Yes. The form works on a phone and takes about one trip between Tunney's Pasture and Blair, so have your banking login ready and finish the e-signature before the signal drops in the downtown tunnel. The payday loans Ottawa page covers what the lender does after you sign.

Will the money land on an evening or a weekend?

Often, because the agreement is e-signed and the e-transfer is sent by the lender's system rather than by an office that closes at five. A weekday evening application usually funds the same night, while one signed late on a Saturday often waits for Monday morning; autodeposit removes the accept step. The e-transfer loans Ottawa page breaks the timing down by day.

I live in Kanata, Orleans or Carleton Place. Does that change anything?

No. A lender licensed in Ontario serves every Ontario address on the same $14 per $100 and the same rules, inside the Greenbelt or out Highway 7. The areas we serve hub has a page for each community, from Centretown to Arnprior.

Bad credit and approval

Can I get a loan in Ottawa with bad credit?

Often, because a payday lender reads the pay deposits in your chequing account before it reads an old collection. An installment lender pulls the file and prices it, so a rough history lands nearer 35% APR than 18%. Approval is never certain; the bad credit loans Ottawa page explains what a decline usually means.

A pay error left my federal deposit short this month. Will a lender still approve me?

Usually, if the deposits before it show a regular biweekly Wednesday pay from the same employer and the shortfall is a one off. The lender sizes the loan to the pay it can see, so a short deposit lowers the ceiling, and a pay stub helps. The bad credit loans Ottawa page covers how lenders read an uneven deposit history.

My term contract ends in March and the next one starts in May. Should I borrow to bridge the gap?

Not with a payday loan, because it comes due on your next pay date and there is no pay date inside the gap. A gap of weeks between contracts is a case for an installment loan with a payment the new contract can carry, or for calling the landlord first. The personal loans Ottawa page works through the contract gap.

I start a term at uOttawa in September and work part time. Can I borrow for the move?

Yes, if the part time pay is landing in your chequing account, because a payday lender needs to see deposits, not a tuition statement. Expect a small first offer sized to those hours, with the repayment date on the pay after the move. The Sandy Hill page covers term start costs around the campus.

Repaying and problems

What if I cannot repay on my pay date?

Contact the lender before the date rather than let the debit bounce, because your bank's returned payment fee is often the most expensive part. An Ontario lender cannot roll the loan into a new one or open a second while the first is outstanding, and must offer the extended payment plan on a third loan in 63 days. The payday loans Ottawa page covers the options.

How do I check a lender is licensed, and where do I complain?

Ask for the licence and check it with Consumer Protection Ontario, which licenses every payday lender and each location, online lenders included; a licence is not an endorsement. If a lender broke the rules, Consumer Protection Ontario takes the complaint. The complaints policy lists what to gather first.

How Loans Ottawa makes money: loansottawa.ca is a free loan connection service, not a lender. When you apply, we match your application with licensed Canadian lenders and earn a referral fee from the lender if your loan funds. This never changes your rate or costs you anything. We do not make credit decisions and never charge borrowers. The lender sets and discloses the cost before you sign; payday fees are capped by provincial law and installment loans run 18% to 35% APR. All lending is subject to lender approval and provincial rules.
